If you read the fantastic NY Mag article by Adam Sternbergh titled ‘You Wrong On’, you know that what followed was a colorful exchange of comments.
There was one comment (dated 4/23/08 3:05pm) that stood out. It stood out because it addressed the black or white thinking that was expressed in all previous comments. Here’s the riff in it’s entirety, oh and “specialtramp” send me an email, I may have a solution to your problem finding something in size 5.
“Can anyone recommend Vivo substitutes for a women with size US 5/Euro 35 feet? Vivo Barefoots start at size US 6 (as do many shoes).
I’m a New Yorker and I go barefoot/sockfoot indoors and wear Keens, or other thin soled flats to work/on the street. I’ve also been practicing taichi for over 12 years and I can tell you that I had fogotten how to walk or stand until I began my practice. The sensation of ‘feeling’ the ground beneath you is a major part of good taichi practice, and is something kids just do naturally. I am completely pain free after years of lower back and foot pain from scoliosis (which can’t be fixed – I have a permanent curve in my spine from radiation treatments for childhood cancer). I’ve been told often that I “walk like a dancer” i.e. gracefully, and that comes from truly knowing my center of gravity, learning to step lightly and keeping my heels flat to the ground (no high heeled shoes).
Going barefoot is a great principle IMO and you don’t have to forego shoes forever to get many of the benefits. It’s ridiculous to me how polarized these discussions become, you’re either for or against and the other side is completely deluded. That didn’t seem the point of the article and doesn’t seem like an intelligent response IMO.”
