Consumers saying “no more” to Motion Control running shoes

By David • Aug 23rd, 2009 • Category: Features

June 2009 retail figures* are showing that:
‘Motion Control’ shoe sales fell 13%, ‘Stability’ shoe sales fell 2%,
while ‘Neutral’ cushioned running shoe sales increased by 16%.
I think this is much more than seasonal trend, it’s proof that consumers and runners alike are searching for shoes that are ‘less‘ rather than ‘more’.
In a related post on Time, [...]

You’re incapable. Hail the running shoe!

By David • Aug 3rd, 2009 • Category: Features

I find it amusing yet disturbing how mainstream running footwear brands try to enforce their belief that there’s something wrong with your body.  Somehow you’re born with deficiencies that prevent you to run, thanks to running shoes a remedy was found.  Too funny!

ESPN poll suggests 1 in 3 people would run barefoot

By David • Aug 2nd, 2009 • Category: Features

ESPN recently conducted an informal poll asking:
“A recent theory in the running world proposes that running without shoes is better for you. Would you consider running barefoot?”
The result? The average from coast-to-coast shows 34% would give it a try…
Below are the results from over 6,000 respondents across the country.  Quite promising data despite nearly 40 [...]

New documentaries examining America’s food system

Original post: good.is by Peter Smith

There’s a bumper crop of new documentaries examining America’s food system. Here’s a sampler.
The slurping of ramen in Tampopo makes me want to run out to the noodle bar. Mario’s Italian food in Mostly Martha turns even humble, dried pasta into something sensuous and ripe with meaning. From Pulp Fiction’s [...]

French Films and Fluid Feet

By Sherian • May 19th, 2009 • Category: Features

Last night Andrew and I got the children off to bed, brewed an herby pot of chamomile tea, and snuggled deeply into our matching, fuzzy-red La-Z-Boy recliners. The DVD selection for the evening: “Amelie” in French with English subtitles.
It had been a few years since I watched a subtitled movie, so it took [...]

Rediscovery of Feet and Soul

By Sherian • May 17th, 2009 • Category: Features

This is the story of how taking off my shoes changed my life for the better. In a way, it is the story of my life, so it is a bit long, but I hope your readers will identify with bits or pieces of it. I know I’m no poster [...]

What the heel?!

By David • Mar 17th, 2009 • Category: Features

I couldn’t resist to expose these ‘Pogo-stick meets high-heel’ shoes. Z-Coil states that their shoes incorporate “patented, shock-absorbing design greatly reduces impact to the body and distributes pressure more evenly across the foot than conventional shoes do. And less impact means less pain.”
These things are totally ridiculous and dangerous to boot. Does the company actually [...]

Barefoot runner goes shopping

I love the feeling of moving through life without shoes. It is like you have added a whole new part of your body to caress your surroundings with.
Shopping barefoot is such a joyous experience. Green bags in hand I hop into the car. The feeling of the mat on [...]

Winter (barefoot) Running

By David • Dec 10th, 2008 • Category: Features

I live in Florida. The extent of ‘winter’ here is… well, there isn’t. While living in Calgary, Canada however (see pic above) I had the pleasure of running through many winter seasons. For those not familiar with Alberta winters, they’re known to last a good 7 months with. Running [...]

Will ECCO’s new BIOM shoe fall short?

By David • Nov 23rd, 2008 • Category: Features

I don’t know why, but I was expecting something truly amazing with the release of ECCO’s new BIOM shoe. How could I not? Their thebiomproject website shouted “everything you know about shoes is wrong”. Although just a few weeks back they changed their copy to, well, better reflect the final product. Perhaps for their [...]
